artist’s statement

I have collected beads since I was eight years old. I make beaded pictorial textiles using waxed silk thread and glass seed beads of various sizes. These textiles are not made on a loom, but in a process more similar to the piecing together of a quilt. Working back and forth in rows with needle and thread, I weave together patches of translucent fabric made of only beads and thread.

In 1993 I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and the seizures have opened a window into another realm. Right before a seizure I feel as if I’m falling backwards while remembering a dream. The translucent quality of the beads illuminates the surfacing into consciousness.

Although I have worked with beads and textiles since I was a child, the seizures have influenced the content of my work. I have always believed in unseen mystical forces, but they became more vivid after the seizures started. Now I express dreams, memories and Biblical revelations in my art. My work crosses a boundary between the scientific and what is impalpable, into the unseen realm of dreams and visions.
