Artist’s statement
Glass beads have been my medium of choice since I was a child. Without a loom, I stitch together patches of fabric made of only beads and thread. Adding beads as I construct the fabric, I use beads as a way of drawing.
I believe in a spiritual realm made real to me through the natural world and through visions. More primal than superstitious, it is the source of both religion and myth. My work is often inspired by dreams and the architectural spaces in which they take place.
I reinterpret my own photographs of natural settings in an attempt to capture the effects of sunlight passing through flora. I select the portion of the photograph that I find most emotionally evocative. I strive for a level of intensity in my work, either in response to the artificial noise of contemporary life or to the beauty of nature that can bring me to tears.
These pieces embody my intentional failure to capture the ineffable beauty of the natural world, as well as the fleeting quality of a dream as it is being forgotten.
